INTERNET SURFING Applications used in the
computer lab: AppleWorks
6: similar to word or word perfect. The
combination of draw and paint allows students to
type reports, add graphics and cut and paste to
turn out many projects that the teacher may
require. This program is also used in Jr. High and
High school. ClarisWorks for Kids:
Used mostly by 2nd
and 3rd grade. Helps them type stories, create
lists for spelling, drawing, and graphs and charts.
Kid Pix:
This program
mainly used for drawing, coloring and helping a
student learn basic skills on the
computer. Netscape:
For Internet use.
Permission from parents is required for every
student for this privilege. Filtering system is in
place for appropriate use of this tool. (see
Computer lab rules) Type to Learn:
This program used
mostly for 3rd grade and up helps students develop
appropriate typing skills. Type to Learn Jr.:
This program
similar to Type to Learn is used by the younger
grades to help develop typing skills. New Keys for Kids:
This program used
by the lower grades helps kids learn where the keys
are and also helps start their development towards
typing. Accelerated Reader:
This program is
designed to evaluate reading skills and help
students develop stronger reading and comprehension
skills. mPower:
This allows not
only students but classes to showcase their art
work and studies in a slide show
production. iMovie:
Places photos,
movies, and other events into a format that can be
viewed by the computer or for special
events. Note:
If a student plans to work on
something from home and doesn't have the above
programs, they can copy the assignment into an
email and send it to the teacher (Holcomb Staff Page ). Try to avoid sending it as
an attachment due to conflicts between
programs.
